Atomic Data is always on the look out for ways to make things simpler for you. The IRS has announced that in 2012 they will lower the expensing and depreciation limits for small business, drastically cutting benefits seen these last two years.

In 2010 and 2011 small businesses could expense up to $500,000 for business hardware and computer software. Starting in 2012 small businesses will only be able to expense up to $125,000. We are not tax professionals, more details about the tax changes for small businesses can be found at IRS.gov.

If your organization has plans to purchase anything from storage equipment to new computers in the future, it’s in your best interest to do it sooner rather than later. We have the resources to get you set up with what you need now, so you can take advantage of the higher expensing and depreciation limits before they are gone.

Contact our sales team to hear more at sales@atomicdata.com or give us a call at 612-466-2000.

Did you hear the charitable bells ringing yesterday? November 16th was “Give to the Max Day” and many businesses around the state were promoting company wide donations to nonprofits and were even matching those donations. Here at Atomic Data we did the same, matching our employee’s charitable donations and helping Give to the Max. With many of our own clients and nonprofit friends on the sponsored list of charitable agencies, it was a great opportunity to give back.

“Give to the Max Day” in Minnesota is sponsored each year by GiveMN.org which makes the donation process simple, offering a centralized website with a variety of nonprofits to donate to directly. As with everyone one in this economy, nonprofits are having trouble keeping pace financially and operationally. GiveMN not only helps these nonprofits raise money, but helps provide guidance. With over 47,000 donors and 3,978 nonprofits, GiveMN.org helped raise about $13.5 million on November 16th.

Still interested in helping make a difference? www.GiveMN.org is a great resource to discover non-profits and charities around the state of Minnesota.

According to a 2007 Google study on the failure trends of hard disks, “over 90% of all new information produced in the world is being stored on magnetic media, most …

According to a 2007 Google study on the failure trends of hard disks, “over 90% of all new information produced in the world is being stored on magnetic media, most of it on hard disk drives” (Failure Trends in a Large Disk Drive Population, FAST 07). As the cost of drives has come down and capacity has gone exponentially upwards, so too has the IT industry’s reliance on magnetic media, specifically hard drives. This reliance on a media prone to failure and subject to disaster has helped create a need for robust, automatic, off and on-site backup solutions. Whether you’re an IT administrator for a Fortune 500 company, or a general manager of a local beauty salon with one location, the need to back up your data safely and securely is the same.

Like it or not, hard drives fail. Rivers will flood, tornadoes will touch down, fires will rage, thieves will steal, electrical substations will break down, and the earth will continue to quake. The question isn’t if, but when. And so the next question you must ask yourself is, what do you have in place to prevent a catastrophic loss of time, money, productivity, intellectual property, and irreplaceable data? With the vast array of varying backup methods (and costs) available today, there is no acceptable excuse for not having a procedure in place to safeguard your often confidential and always valuable corporate and personal data.

The ever falling price per gigabyte of online storage space along with the increasing availability of bandwidth nationwide has made off site backup into the ‘cloud’ readily available to the masses. Users once backing up to DVDs, external hard drives, or another computer now have the option to automatically send to and store their data in secure, encrypted redundant, enterprise class off site data centers designed specifically to keep your data safe. CrashPlan, one of Atomic Data’s backup services, offers exactly that.

The CrashPlan client application is a multi platform one, compatible with Mac, Windows, and Linux workstations and servers. The client, which runs in the background, can be configured for timed backups, custom network and CPU usage, specific file ex/inclusions, and versioning. Once your backup is complete, the client will continually update your data when files are added, removed or revised. Atomic’s technicians on the 24/7 Helpdesk monitor server status at all times to ensure your backup is always up to date.

The peace of mind and simplicity of the CrashPlan client application and the safety of Atomic’s servers and monitoring equal a smart decision when choosing a data backup solution; a decision that will pay dividends when the next disaster or hard disk failure strikes.

I’m sure there are still those of us who remember having to get up off the couch, walk across the room, and turn the dial on the black and white TV to the next station then have to adjust the antenna and walk back to the couch. This annoyance led to the development of push buttons to adjust sound and channel and eventually the TV remote made its way into our homes so we might all enjoy the comfort of our La-Z-Boy. Much like inconvenience and annoyance of having to get up to change the volume and channel on a TV, so too is waking up in the middle of the night to drive downtown and restart a server in the middle of the night. Server management needed its TV remote solution. Remote management of your server and all work machines is not just a nice thought on future technology, its actually happening right now!

Nowadays there is a plethora of software that can monitor everything including services running on your PC or server, your disk space, and even ISP circuits and networking equipment. In fact, nearly anything that has a network connection and software running can theoretically be monitored. All you need is a client installed on a machine that reports back to a central website, server, personal device or even an email sent to the owner to inform of an outage and what steps to take.

We make good use of this technology here at Atomic Data. Our helpdesk can use this software to determine when and why a customer’s device is having problems. We can then remote access the server and fix it before the issue affects end users. In severe cases where a server has become completely un-usable, a backup copy can be reloaded and reconfigured to a virtual machine and is back online within hours of the server failure. In the past similar issues would have a company down for the better part of a week. With the help of this software our customers and their businesses stay online instead of losing money daily with a downed server and, in the long run, a small monthly fee for remote management saves our customers thousands of dollars a month rather than having to pay per blocked hour of work when an issue does arise.

Remote management of your servers is the future of server monitoring and it is here now.

It’s a short one today but we have lots to look at!

Wednesday, August 31

Our engineers have been spending numerous hours in the Hands-on Labs portion of VMworld, getting hands-on experience with all the newly released products including vSphere 5.0. With approximately 500 seats, it is fairly easy to get into the labs, especially during the early morning and later evening hours. The entire set up mimics a real world situation to experience first hand the products capabilities. Atomic will continue to leverage VMware products as our Cloud continues to grow.

See below images from both the Hands-on Labs as well as the VMworld floor:
